Subject: [ALDERMEN:913] Fire and Death of My Brother, Lorenzo Valley, 11/20/1956-12/29/2010

I just want to pause and say thank you to each and all of you who came out tonight and were so very helpful to my mother, my family and to me. Your efforts are truly and sincerely appreciated. In difficult times like these, God always reminds us that there is a special place in our hearts for our sincere and concerned compatriots.

I thank each of you. I appreciate Dana Flowers who came to the scene. I appreciate Chief Wilson for handling my mother gingerly. I appreciate Chief Brown, Captain Smith, Firefighter Clark, Engineer Fluker, Captain Gant and many more on the fire department for your expressions of concern and for extending a helping hand. I am grateful to Major Ronald Scott, Sgt. Bivens, Sgt. Cox, Detective Winston, Operator White, Corporal Mike Thomas, Sgt. Mike Thomas, Officer Carson McGee and so many others who expressed concern and offered help. I am honored that you cared. I am grateful that you performed this civic duty with professional dignity and grace.

I appreciate Eddie Lewis O'neal for coming out and boarding up the fire scorched building. I appreciate Eugene Handley, Deputy Coroner, for his assistance as well. I thank John Huff and Colette Moore for their early morning expressions of concern. I am truly grateful.

My brother, Lorenzo, is gone to a better place. He probably succumbed to smoke inhalation from the fire. He was my second oldest brother; the second of the 13 children. He is also the second brother to pass way. My eldest brother, Sylvester, Jr., died in 2002 after my father died in 2001. Lorenzo was a U. S. Air Force veteran who received an honorable discharge. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service for many years after leaving the Air Force. About nine years ago, he returned to Helena-West Helena to live and assist my mother after my father's death. He was divorced. His children and grandchildren live in the Cleveland, Ohio area.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. My mother will make those soon.

If no one else ever tells you again, please know that we, the Valley Family, are grateful to each and everyone of you whether your name is printed above or not. May God Bless and Keep you is our prayer.
